In this anniversary year, I would like to pay tribute to all those people who, over the years have demonstrated
their commitment and dedication to the Western Australian hospitality industry.
Through their efforts, the public of Western Australia can expect a first class dining experience when spending
their dollars in any restaurant that has achieved Gold Plate recognition.
Since its conception forty years ago the Gold Plate program continues to seek out and reward those who provide world
class standards in service, cuisine and ambience - whether in a restaurant, winery, hotel or café.
In the introductory year, 1967, there were three finalists - winners of either the Gold Knife, Gold Fork or Gold Spoon
award. In 1968 it was decided to award a Gold Plate to the overall winner from these finalists and judges
declared the fledgling Parmalia Hotel (now the Parmelia Hilton) the overall winner of the Gold Plate.
The awards were expanded in 1971 to include a Gold Goblet award for country establishments and the first winner
was a restaurant within Geralton's Haceinda Motel.
Since those times and with the growth of the awards we have been able to expand our recognition of all
styles of dining.
In my fifth year as Chairperson, I would like to congradulate those restaurants who have taken into consideration
the health aspects of their menus. With "Excellence in Health" as one of our Gold Plate awards, we acknowledge
the growing demand from customers for healthy choices.
We are Proud to have the long standing support of our major sponsors; Meat and Livestock Australia, the WA
state Government through the Department of Health and the Department of Agriculture and Food.
We have formed a substantial partnership with The West Australian which ensures our awards program
reaches a far wider audience. I would like to thank these and all other sponsors, as well as the hospitality
industry for their continued support of the Gold Plate awards.
