About The Catering Institute of Australia (WA)
The Catering Institute has been established nationally for over 41 years and 40 years in Western Australia. We provide professional recognition for member’s skills, training and industry experience. Our motto is
“to encourage and reward excellence”
It is an organisation, which seeks to provide a framework of activities and services for its members to enable them to improve their level of skill and ability in whichever sector of the hospitality industry they are engaged. Membership gives professional recognition of skills. It seeks to provide avenues to improvement in areas such as management, training and human resources, which will facilitate progress along the industry career path chosen by the member.
With over 8000 members nationally and divisions in every State membership encompasses all facets of the Hospitality & Tourism Industry. As a professional membership body it is able to represent the independent view of the industry to all interested parties and is not driven by employer or union groups. Nationally it is represented on all national training and industry advisory groups.
In Western Australia the there are over 500 members spread all over the State and is very active.
With a fulltime Executive Officer the Catering Institute runs:

- The Annual Gold Plate Awards for Restaurants
(The oldest and only independent review of Restaurants in Australia)
- Hospitality Manager of the Year Award Competition
- Chef of the Year Competition
- Professional Waiter of the Year Competition
- Student Waiter of the Year Competition
- The Wolf Blass Wine List of the Year Award

The Catering Institute is involved as:
- A founding Council Member with The Tourism and Hospitality Training Council
- A Board Member of Tourism Training
- Chairmanship of The IETC Training Accreditation Panel
- Chairmanship of The Australian Hospitality Review Panel for Trainers & establishments
- Member of the Recognition of Prior Learning Review Panel for Chefs & Cooks
- Member of the WA Government Smoking Taskforce and numerous other State & Federal Government Committees and advisory bodies
It can be seen the Institute is a vital and progressive member of the Hospitality Industry serving the needs and representing the views of the industry and its members in a truly independent and professional manner. We meet on a regular basis with teams of membership for Management, Chefs, Food & Beverage, Marketing and of course Students. Membership offers the chance to both socialize and network with other industry professionals and to further the goal of professionalism in the hospitality industry.
